Within retail and other applications, the use of Ipad and other tablet devices is becoming increasingly popular for interaction with customers. These small touchscreen devices are being used for several reasons: small size, integrated WiFi and contemporary design being just a few. There is an obvious requirement for small screen interactive devices within the retail, leisure and other application spaces but are commercially available consumer products such as tablet PCs and Apple Ipads the ideal solution?

Security and Mounting
Unless you intend your device to be handheld at all times by a staff member, the issue of theft and security will be present. In many applications where Ipads are present they are physically mounted to a wall or desk using complex brackets. The mounting kits take away some of the reasons to use the Ipad (style and design) once it is fitted within a rugged metal housing.

Battery Life
The tablet devices are designed to be portable and have a limited battery life of a few hours. This is not good for retailers where the device needs to be on for 8 hours or more most days of the week, and having to charge the batteries may result in the requirement to have extra devices effectively working in shifts! Additionally, when mounting the tablet to a wall or desk, some thought is required as to how to connect the external power supply.

Network Connectivity
Tablets by their very nature are portable devices and all come with integrated WIFI for wireless connectivity to the internet. Many also come with 3g connectivity though this may be costly when used for long periods every day. Few tablets, in particular the Ipad, are able to be hard-wired to networking points for 100% reliable connection to the store network.

Additional Peripherals
Kiosks are designed to easily integrate many and varied input and output devices including RFID, chip and pin, thermal printers, bar code scanner and many more. A tablet device has not been designed to be used in a store environment such that specific device drivers and additional hardware would have to be adapted in order to work. These additional items will again detract from the design elements of the Ipad or tablet and always look as a bit of an afterthought.

The Solution
We believe that the ideal solution can be created by combining the positive elements from both product groups. Touch screen kiosks have developed over many years and much experience gained through real-world installations. Small touchscreen kiosks, Micro Kiosks, are being developed with 10in, 12in or small widescreen displays which include resistive or capacitive touchscreens.

The kiosks are available with Intel Atom or Core2Duo platforms which suit most applications. From the outset, Micro kiosks are designed to include many options including 2D bar code scanners, thermal printers and much more. The kiosk design is rugged using hard-wearing components but with contemporary design.
